Hatch covers have to be checked, inspected and tested at regular intervals by the ship's crew and company's superintendent in order to assess their operational status and establish both structural and weather tight integrity. This is important to ensure that the ship is in a seaworthy and cargo worthy condition.

The SHERLOG ultrasonic detection equipment has been designed to perform non-destructive weather-tightness inspections of hatch covers, doors, ramps, covers, windows, bulkheads or any other on-board or offshore-related tightness control.

Only ultrasonic testing gives the surveyor the right assessment about the required compression between the rubber packing and the compression bar. And testing can be performed empty or loaded.

The SHERLOG TA , a handheld instrument, as required by the IACS Unified Rule Z.17,and Russian Register, has been formally Type Approved by Lloyd's Register, ABS, DNV and Hellenic Register.

Currently it is the only equipment of its kind to have obtained such approvals.

Among its many features the SHERLOG TA offers a unique software routine, dedicated to hatch cover ultrasonic tightness testing, to memorize, log, and download to PC all measured survey data and allow detailed and accurate reporting. Moreover, the Sherlog TA data logging features tamper-free data transfer for enhanced reporting.

Mandates by P&I Clubs and Class make ultrasonic inspection with Sherlog TA the accepted method for inspecting hatch covers.

Sherlog TA training class meets the standards set out by the Nautical Institute for Classification Societies Surveyors, re: IACS Unified Requirement Z.17; revision 2, Aug 2002) as well as most P&I Clubs require operators carrying out tightness tests of hatches with ultrasonic equipment to hold a valid "Certificate of Qualification". This Certificate is obtained after a theoretical and on-board practical training and after having successfully passed a written examination.

Certified Operators have successfully demonstrated:

• That they have knowledge of different hatch designs, their functioning and sealing features.

• That they have experience with operation and maintenance of different hatch designs.

• That they are able to document a theoretical and practical training onboard in using the ultrasonic equipment specified.
